Brian Ingerson's CGI::Kwiki was used for this prototype, because it was simple, quick to get going, and yet easy to extend.

Some kind of cacheing architecture will be necessary for speedy response on large wikis, but the important factor is that wiki content typically does not change very fast. The expensive part - scanning for phrases - does not have to be done in real time.

prospects

I suspect that LinkGeneration and LinkAnnotation would be widely useful in a great many systems that are not wikis.

They do need to be used in some sort of restricted area because phrases have particular usages in different fields of interest.
